Generational Difference: Millennials and the Changes They Bring to the Workplace

Presented by: Kim Garrison, Sr. Consultant, One Digital, Health and Benefits

Location: Unity Church, 2825 Hydraulic Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901

Session: Generational Differences – Millennials and the changes they bring to the workplace.

Info: They are known as Millennials, Gen Y, Gen Next, Echo Boomers, the Baby-on-Board generation, Screenagers, and Facebookers to name a few. Whatever you prefer to call them, they are the nearly 85 million born between 1976 and 2001 (according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) who have already joined or are preparing to join the workforce. By 2020 nearly 50% of the US workforce will be Millennials. By comparison, Generation X’s (generation before) represent only about 20% today. The sheer volume of Millennials combined with the relative lack of Generation X’s and the increasing retirement of Baby Boomers, means employers will be facing leadership gaps. By all accounts, Millennials are unlike preceding generations. They view the world differently and define success differently. This has led to misunderstanding among the different generations in the workplace. Business leaders must learn this generations unique competencies and prospective and harness their strengths.
