Retaining and Developing Talent:  Optimizing Your Workforce for Bottom Line Growth

Presented by: Jim Harshaw, President, JimHarshawJr.com

Location: Unity of Charlottesville, 2825 Hydraulic Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901

Session Content Summary
Every HR manager wants to improve performance so that it impacts bottom line growth. But how do you do it? How do you engage your workforce so that team members are laser-focused? So that they are not only clear on their objectives but motivated to do the work necessary to achieve the desired outcomes? So that they go from a "got to" to "get to" mindset? That is, they get to go to work rather than they've got to go to work.

The secret lies in the framework from which high-performers operate. Whether elite athletes, successful entrepreneurs, or top business leaders, they all have a clear understanding of how to get the right things done. In an increasingly distracted world, focus is increasingly valuable.
First, high-performers know what's most important. They have clearly defined principles and values that drive both small and big decisions. This clarity provides confidence and decisiveness as well as consistency.

Second, they have clear objectives that align with their principles and values. When goals are aligned with principles and values then failure, obstacles and setbacks are irrelevant. What you value doesn't change based on how easy or hard a task is. This is why people like military special operators, elite athletes and even young mothers can consistently do hard things while others fail to execute on the smallest tasks with persistence and diligence.

Third, they create an environment- both internal and external- that facilitates success. That is, they spend time with people who have a success mindset. They consume media- books, audios, video- that support their goals. Their self-talk reinforces their mindset to succeed.
And, finally, they have systems in place that ensure follow through. That is, they welcome accountability and create processes that enable successful outcomes.
In this session, Jim will share how human resource professionals can recreate this high-performance framework for their workforce so that businesses can experience bottom line growth.

About our speaker
Failure, struggle and setbacks are not only an inevitable part of life but a necessary step on the path to success. Jim Harshaw has learned many life lessons on the wrestling mat. Having been a Division I All American and won three ACC Championships for the University of Virginia, trained at the Olympic Training Center and competed overseas for Team USA, he has experienced significant triumph and devastating defeat. He relates those powerful lessons of failure, struggle and setback to empower his audiences to overcome their own challenges and achieve success despite their inevitable failures.

Jim’s received his BA in science from the University of Virginia as well as a MT (Master of Teaching) from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. He went on to become the youngest Division I head wrestling coach in the country, start multiple businesses, and raise millions of dollars for non-profits around the country.
